Who is Stroud Brewery?

Established in 2006 by agro-ecologist Greg Pilley, Stroud Brewery is a certified B Corp with sustainability at its core. Known for its organic beers and vibrant taproom, the brewery has grown into a community hub built on strong environmental and social values.

Its mission? To make outstanding organic beer and bring people together to inspire positive change.

The Challenge

Stroud Brewery had been measuring its carbon footprint for several years, but the process was time-consuming and heavily manual. Without a dedicated sustainability team, they relied on external consultants and student-led projects to gather and process emissions data, which was primarily in spreadsheets.

This approach made it difficult to maintain consistency year on year, particularly when it came to Scope 3 calculations, where high-level assumptions had to be made using spend-based data, rather than activity data. The team needed a more automated, structured system that could grow with the business and support emissions reduction planning.

The Solution

To simplify their footprint measurement and improve data accuracy, Stroud began using the Zevero platform to automate data collection and analysis, reducing the need for manual uploads and making it easier for the team to track emissions across all scopes.

Zevero also supported Stroud with tailored reporting, helping the team build specific slides and data splits aligned to their needs. Scope 3 automation was particularly impactful, enabling consistent and repeatable modelling of emissions across all categories.

Integrating the platform with our accounts and brewery management systems was very simple, and we have always received support as needed. The team has been super accommodating.

The Results

Stroud Brewery now has the tools and structure in place to track its footprint over time and plan effectively for the future.

  • Reduced emissions intensity: 26% decrease in emissions per £ and an 8% decrease in emissions per litre produced since FY22, even while the business has grown.
  • Uncovered key hotspots: Identified high-impact areas like ingredients and packaging, enabling more focused reduction planning.
  • Maintained consistency in reporting: After four years of working with Zevero, the team now has consistent methodologies that support year-on-year comparisons and long-term planning.
  • Benchmarked progress: Compared their footprint against industry benchmarks and top 10% breweries using Brew Resourceful data.
Initially, scope 3 automation has enabled easy and consistent modelling of our entire emissions. This has given us confidence in the measurement as a basis for reduction planning, improved efficiencies and purchase choices.

Looking Ahead

Stroud Brewery is now focused on developing a carbon strategy that includes setting reduction targets and working with partners to support residual verified offsets.

"To start improving, you need to measure, and Zevero is an extremely time-effective solution that helps simplify the task."
